How can I find out which manufacturer made the axle and the overrun mechanism?
When it comes to spare parts, it is the manufacturer of the axle and overrun brake system that matters — not the manufacturer of the trailer. A trailer of brand X may have an axle from AL-KO, Knott, BPW or Peitz.
Where to look:
- Type plate on the axle tube, usually in the centre: manufacturer’s name, axle type; in the case of AL-KO, often an ETI number and frequently the brake size.
- Anchor plate behind the brake drum: the manufacturer, part number and wheel brake type are often stamped there.
- Stamped markings or a sticker on the overrun brake mechanism on the drawbar.
- The trailer’s type plate on the frame: this states the manufacturer, permissible gross weight and drawbar load — but not always the axle manufacturer.
Important: The axle and overrun brake mechanism may be from different manufacturers. For brake shoes, the axle manufacturer is relevant; for parts of the overrun brake mechanism — linkage, handbrake lever, dampers — the manufacturer of the overrun brake mechanism is relevant.
Is the type plate no longer legible? Photos of the axle, overrun brake mechanism and the old part that has been removed will help us identify the correct replacement. In addition, any stamped numbers on the old part will help — we have a record of such reference numbers, which often allow us to identify the part unambiguously.
