Do I have to register, pay tax on and insure my trailer?

Registration: Trailers with a maximum design speed exceeding 25 km/h must be registered — they require their own number plate, their own registration documents and their own third-party liability insurance. The registration office requires, amongst other things, the vehicle registration documents, proof of the annual roadworthiness test and an eVB number from the insurer.

Vehicle tax: This is based on the authorised gross weight and is calculated per 200 kg or part thereof, subject to an annual cap.

Seasonal registration: Often the most cost-effective solution for trailers used infrequently — tax and insurance are only payable for the months in which the trailer is registered.

Insurance: The trailer requires its own third-party liability cover. Damage to the trailer itself is only covered by comprehensive or third-party, fire and theft cover.
