What sort of driving licence do I need for my trailer?

Category B: Towing vehicle with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500 kg plus a trailer weighing up to 750 kg. If the trailer is heavier, the combined mass of the towing vehicle and trailer must not exceed 3,500 kg.

Code B96: Extension of Class B. Trailers over 750 kg are permitted; the combined weight of the towing vehicle and trailer must not exceed 4,250 kg. B96 is not a separate licence category, but rather a training course without an examination.

Category BE: Trailers up to 3,500 kg, towing vehicle up to 3,500 kg — totalling up to 7,000 kg. There is no additional upper limit for this combination.

Important: The decisive factor is always the authorised maximum mass as stated in the vehicle documents, not the actual weight. An empty, heavy trailer therefore counts as a full load.

If in doubt, please check your vehicle registration documents or enquire at the driving licence authority — we do not provide binding information regarding driving licences.
