How do I attach a trailer properly?

1. Check and clean the ball. It should be clean and lightly greased — except in the case of anti-sway couplings, which must remain grease-free.
2. Move the trailer into position and use the support wheel to raise it until the coupling is positioned over the ball.
3. Open the coupling, lower it and allow it to engage. A distinct clicking sound is normal.
4. Check the fit: the lock indicator must show that the coupling is locked. Also, lift the trailer slightly — the coupling must not come away from the ball.
5. Attach the breakaway cable — to a fixed point on the vehicle, not to the ball neck.
6. Plug in the connector and check the lights: left and right indicators, brake lights, tail lights and rear fog lights.
7. Crank the jockey wheel all the way up and lock it in place. This is the step most often forgotten.
8. Stow the wheel chocks, release the handbrake, and check the load and side panels.

Before setting off, give the vehicle a final all-round check: tyre pressure appears to be correct, nothing is hanging loose, the tarpaulin is secure, and the number plate is visible and illuminated.
