Frequently asked questions about this product
The quickest way is to check the markings on the vehicle. Only if these are missing should you take measurements.
1. Axle type plate — the best source. It is usually located in the centre of the axle tube. Ideally, the type of wheel brake will be stated directly on it. With AL-KO, you’ll often find an ETI number (spare part identification number) — this allows the brake to be uniquely identified. If both are missing, the permissible axle load, manufacturer and type number will help.
2. Anchor plate — the second source. The anchor plate is the mounting plate behind the brake drum. The manufacturer, part number and exact wheel brake type are often stamped on the back. A useful identifying feature: red cover caps on the backing plate indicate a brake with automatic adjustment.
3. Stamped markings on the brake shoes. The manufacturer’s name or a number is often stamped on the removed shoes themselves. Any such number is helpful — we have a database of reference numbers which often allows us to identify the part with certainty.
4. If nothing is legible: take measurements. Two measurements are usually sufficient:
- Inner diameter of the brake drum, for example 200 mm
- Brake shoe or lining width, for example 50 mm
This gives the standard designation 200 x 50. Please also send photos: one of the complete brake assembly, one of the anchor plate, and one of the removed brake shoe.
One thing you mustn’t get mixed up about: it’s the manufacturer of the axle that matters, not that of the trailer. A trailer of brand X may have an axle from AL-KO, Knott, BPW or Peitz. And identical dimensions do not necessarily mean an identical fit — an AL-KO axle requires AL-KO brake shoes, even if another manufacturer offers the same size.
Select by manufacturer: brake pads and brake shoes. You’ll also find matching brake drums and brake cables here.
