The overrun brake operates purely mechanically: when braking, the trailer moves forwards, the drawbar retracts and, via a pulley system, linkage and brake cables, actuates the drum brakes. If braking performance deteriorates, it is almost always due to one of the following:
- Stuck brake cables — the most common cause. A cable that is stiff to move applies the brakes too late and releases too slowly, usually on one side.
- Worn brake shoes — the travel of the drawbar becomes noticeably longer.
- Dry pulley or linkage — lubricate the grease nipples and check for free movement.
- Brakes not adjusted — often necessary after around 1,000 km with new brake linings.
Automatic reverse brake: When reversing, the brake shoes swing away; otherwise, the trailer would become blocked. A brief jerk when starting to reverse is normal and not a fault.
Important when adjusting: Adjustment is carried out on the wheel brakes, not by shortening the linkage. A shortened linkage causes the brakes to drag, the drums overheat and the linings wear out quickly.
There are no fixed maintenance intervals — an annual check is standard practice. Spare parts: Overrun devices, brake cables and brake shoes.
