The AL-KO AKS 3504 anti-sway coupling is designed for trailers with a permissible total weight of up to 3600 kg and is suitable for drawbars with a diameter of 60 mm. With a permissible drawbar load of 350 kg, this coupling offers stable stabilisation of the trailer combination. Thanks to the integrated anti-sway technology, the AKS 3504 effectively suppresses unwanted rolling and pitching movements of the trailer, which is particularly advantageous at higher speeds or in critical driving situations. The four friction linings ensure optimum damping. This enables a higher theoretical maximum speed and helps to calm the trailer down more quickly in the event of sudden driving manoeuvres. In addition, the coupling is equipped with an integrated anti-theft device that makes unauthorised access more difficult. The safety ball supplied prevents objects from being inserted into the coupling when the trailer is not connected to the towing vehicle. The scope of delivery includes the AL-KO AKS 3504, an integrated anti-theft device, a safety ball, two M14 hexagon bolts and two M14 self-locking nuts. The holes in the coupling have a diameter of 14.5 mm. The AL-KO reference number is 1225763.

Nominal dimension, wear limit and the three measurement directions on the ball joint

Ball head on the towing vehicle: The new ball head has a diameter of 50 mm; the wear limit is 49 mm. Measure in several directions using a calliper — the ball wears down in an oval shape, and even a single point measuring less than 49 mm means it needs replacing.

Tow ball coupling on the trailer: Signs include noticeable play on the ball, rattling whilst driving, or a coupling that no longer engages properly. Many couplings have a wear indicator on the handle — if the pointer is in the red zone, it needs replacing.

Assess both together: a new coupling fitted to a worn-out ball will continue to rattle.

Lubrication: The ball and coupling wear out much faster if left dry. An important exception is anti-sway couplings: their friction linings must remain grease-free; in this case, only the ball is cleaned. Grease on the linings renders the anti-sway damping ineffective and ruins the linings.

A worn-out pair will be flagged during the annual general inspection. Replacement: Ball couplings and accessories.
